Some keyboards don't have an insert key and I thought that was the case with the Eee but your blog pointed me to it's location (easy to overlook). I must have done just as you said, accidentally tapped it when I was aiming for the backspace or delete key. Then I got stuck in overwrite hell. Thanks for the post.
